I was recovering form a mild stroke when I began to experience pain in my jaw, ear, head and neck. My physician and neurologist were stumped. All tests came back normal. They concluded that it must be nerve damage from the stroke. I happened to mention my problems at my next dental check up. Dr. Rakowsky did a thorough exam and explained to me about TMJ disorder and how and why he thought that was my problem. He made an occlusal guard for me to wear while I sleep. It is very comfortable and I am hardly aware I am wearing it. Within a few days my symptoms were gone. Who would have ever thought such a small appliance could make such a difference in my life? I was unhappy about the appearance of my front teeth since I was a young girl. I never smiled for photographs because I didn't like my smile. My two front teeth were chipped in a sledding accident when I was eight, and I had crowding as well.
